Biography

An Architect with over 15 years experience in the creative research of virtual environments, and media, in art, architecture and design, Derek’s recent work is in software, custom interfaces and networks for mixed realities and virtual worlds through the Emergent Objects programme of research for the AHRC/EPSRC.

Derek has led and programmed a series of artist-led Research and development projects that culminate in seminars and symposia including curated workshops and research contributions for Ultrasound 2002-2005 (Huddersfield), Cybersonica 2005 (Science Museum, London), Future Sonic 2006 (Manchester), Lumen 2001-2006, Architecture Week 2001-2007 (Huddersfield) and MakeArt, 2007 (France).

Over the past 10 years Derek has provided professional development and mentoring for creative practitioners through residencies and fellowships funded by Arts Council England, NESTA, the Clore Cultural Leadership programme, Yorkshire Forward

As Principal Lecturer in Digital Media Design has since 1998 designed and led undergraduate and postgraduate courses in multimedia, digital photography, animation, games, virtual reality, smart and reflexive systems and advanced CAD and Rapid Prototyping. Derek is Course Leader for the MA in Digital Media Design and also teaches on the MA by Research. He is currently supervising three PhD students. Through the Higher Education Innovation Fund Derek has designed and delivered short courses in Future Skills, Future Media and Future Technologies.
