Biography

I studied at Lancaster University where I gained a BA in English Language and Linguistics (1997), an MA in Language Studies (1999), a PGCert in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (2002) and a PhD in Linguistics (2004). Following my BA I taught English as a foreign language in northern Italy (1997-8). Between 2000 and 2002 I was a Research Associate in the Department of Linguistics and English Language at Lancaster University. I was Lecturer in English Language at Liverpool Hope University from 2003 until I took up my current post at Huddersfield in 2004. I have been a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy since its foundation.

Since 2007 I have been Treasurer of the international Poetics and Linguistics Association and was part of the organising committee for the 25th PALA conference, held at Huddersfield in 2005. In 2001 whilst a PhD student, I won the Longman Prize, awarded by PALA for best conference paper by a postgraduate student. I edit the series Advances in Stylistics for Continuum, and with Lesley Jeffries I co-edit Perspectives on the English Language for Palgrave. I have reviewed manuscripts for Language and Literature, Poetics and Journal of Pragmatics and refereed for the AHRC.

Research & Scholarship

I have research interests in stylistics, cognitive linguistics, corpus linguistics and the history of the English language. Within stylistics I am particularly interested in the linguistic analysis of dramatic texts, specifically how models from cognitive linguistics can be employed in the stylistic analysis of drama. I have written a book on this topic (Point of View in Plays, John Benjamins, 2006), examining how deictic shift theory can be used to account for viewpoint effects in drama. My current research on the stylistics of drama covers linguistic representations of perceptions of reality, characterisation and the stylistics of film.

My interest in corpus linguistics arises out of using corpus techniques for stylistic analysis. I am currently working on two corpus-based projects. The first has received funding of £14,401 from the University of Huddersfield Research Communities Fund and is focused on investigating the diachronic development of discourse presentation from Early Modern English to Present Day English, using a corpus-based methodology. The second is a project using corpus linguistic methodologies to investigate the language of popular fiction, which I am working on with Michaela Mahlberg (University of Liverpool).

Additionally, I have written a textbook on the History of English (Routledge, 2008), and, with Lesley Jeffries, am working on a book on stylistics for Cambridge University Press.
