What’s the town of Huddersfield got to offer?

At Huddersfield you’re well placed for a great start to your university career.

Our attractive campus is right in the centre of town within walking distance of shops, clubs, bars, pubs and eating places. There is no shortage of student accommodation either. Huddersfield is a fantastic town in which to work, relax and play.

In a Royal Bank of Scotland survey featured in The Times in September 2007, Huddersfield was ranked seventh within a list of British towns with “successful schools, fancy restaurants and shops, impressive cultural attractions and, surprisingly, affordable houses”.

Facts about Huddersfield...

Musical town

Huddersfield is well known for its musical heritage.

  •  The internationally-renowned Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival (cutting edge and avant-garde).
  •  Huddersfield Choral Society (you won’t hear a better rendition of Handel’s Messiah).
  • The University’s Music Department is one of the largest in the UK and students perform orchestral, jazz, big band and early music concerts throughout the year.

Cultural town

Huddersfield is rated among the UK’s top ten towns for an up-and-coming creative, social and cultural mix, according to the book ‘CreativeWorld’, by The Fish Can Sing.

  • We’re ‘the poetry capital of the North’ with regular readings and performances.
  • The University hosts an annual literature festival.
  • There is a recognised ‘cluster’ of multimedia and creative businesses, many of them formed by graduates.

Enterprising town

The University is a key strategic partner in many of the town’s developments. We work closely with the local council, the town centre and regional development partners. Close links with the Textile Centre of Excellence mean business support is available to our textile students as well as access to its new businesses incubation facility. Our Sports Business Generator is a collaboration with the Galpharm Stadium – the home of the= Huddersfield Giants rugby team and Huddersfield Town Football Club. And a partnership with the Media Centre means businesses in the creative industries are well supported.

Sports facilities

Huddersfield has strong sporting associations, as well as plenty of opportunities to play or spectate, and Rugby League was born in the George Hotel, adjacent to the station.

The University is the main business partner of the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team and we have close links with the club and others through our health, sport and media courses. The University also has links with Huddersfield Town Football Club and in fact our University football teams play their home games on Huddersfield Town’s training ground at Storthes Hall Park. The University Sports Hall is very conveniently located on campus and it houses the Fitness Centre, squash courts and the main Sports Hall.

The Sport and Fitness Department organises a regular programme of fitness classes including yoga, dance and boxercise and the majority of our indoor sports teams train there.

The University Sport and Fitness Department prides itself on helping students to keep fit and healthy whatever their level of fitness when they arrive at University. The Fitness Centre is well equipped with the latest TechnoGym equipment and there are personal trainers on hand to guide you in the use of the equipment to help you meet your fitness goals.
