New Business School building in full swing

Work is well underway for the new Business School building between Firth Street and the Huddersfield Canal. The new build project represents the next major building investment for the university with an investment of over £16 million.

Construction began with the demolition of the Albany Mills building. Approximately 90% of the old mill from the 19th century will be recycled and used in the new structure.

The foundations for the new building were soon in place and the steel frame is being erected.

The existing Firth Street building has been gutted ready for a complete refurbishment, to which will be added a new four-storey structure on Firth Street and a curving wing to join the two parts, creating an enclosed courtyard. The expansion will add 4,000 sq m to the existing building, more than doubling its size.

The new building is scheduled to be ready for students in September 2010. Business School Dean Prof. Chris Cowton believes this ambitious target can be met. “BAM Construction have worked with the University before and delivered on time, and this project has got off to a good start. Everybody is very positive about it.”
